What Foods Cause Farting?

Of course, everybody has their sweet spots when it comes to making farts–it has a lot to do with the bacteria in your particular gut–but there are some general categories of food that tend to be a fart trigger. Below we have laid out what foods cause farting.

Raffinose

— This is the famous culprit. Raffinose is found in beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and asparagus.

Fructose

– Nearly all fruits fit in here, the most notorious being, of course, prunes. Perhaps less intuitively, the fructose in onions is what makes them a fart favorite as well.

Lactose

– Dairy, we all know how cheese helps the gas pass.

Sorbitol

— Chewing gum and hard candies along with many other artificially sweetened products and some fruits fit in here. Eating too much candy, especially the sugar-free varieties, can create an intestinal firestorm.

Fiber & Starches – Bran is the most obvious of these but also included are potatoes, oats, wheat, and corn.

You can also add carbonated beverages to this list. While they do not contain the ingredients listed, they cause you to ingest more air and that air has to get out somehow.

So as you can see, in the end, the answer to ‘what foods cause farting?’ is pretty much everything. Embrace it. #FreeTheFart
